History

The Kamuzu Academy Alumni Association Limited (KA3 Limited) was established in March 2020 under the Companies Act as a company limited by guarantee to facilitate the association of former students of the prestigious Kamuzu Academy Alumni. KA3 Limited is a not for profit organization and its core objects largely focus on undertraining charity related activities in favour of those facing unique challenges and to the less privileged in the wider society. The Association exists to foster the ideals for which its Father and Founder, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, stood for in the area of education namely, classical education, intellectual astuteness, independent thinking and commitment professional excellence.

The Kamuzu Academy, located in the central region of Malawi, was opened on 21st November 1981 by its Founding Father and former President of the Republic of Malawi, Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda as mentioned above. It was the wish of the Founder that the Kamuzu Academy should produce highly qualified students who will be in a position to lead in various spheres of development. It was Dr Banda’s vision that Kamuzu Academy students would provide a bedrock of Malawi’s intellectual and professional capacities in order to sustain the country’s social-economic development.

During the first ten years after independence, Malawi was primarily concerned about producing generalists to fill gaps left by the departing expatriate civil servants. General degrees and diplomas were necessary for public administration at district, regional and national levels. Although great strides had been achieved to churn out qualified Malawians for general administration, Malawi still relied on expatriates for highly specialized skills such as medicine, pharmacy, engineering, forestry, veterinary sciences, architecture, quantity surveying,

It is now over forty years since the Kamuzu Academy was established. There has been no doubt that Kamuzu’s vision behind the establishment of this unique institution has been realized. The alumni of Kamuzu Academy are literally present in nearly all sectors of life. The dominance of the alumni in medicine, engineering and several specialized areas is almost self-evident. KA3 Limited exists to provide a legal basis for the alumni so that resources can legitimately be mobilized and applied towards the stated objects in the Memorandum and Articles of Association. KA3 has approximately 200 registered members. It is estimated that there are approximately 1600 alumni presently alive. KA3 Limited will in the near future ensure that the se are registered and fully participate in the affairs of the activities of the Alumni.

KA3 Limited has been involved in high profile philanthropic activities. The company was established on the outset of the deadly pandemic, COVID-19. An aggressive resource mobilization campaign was launched in early 2020 aimed at raising funds (approximately K20 million) to purchase protective equipment (PPEs) for the vulnerable health workers. The equipment was provided to the major hospitals in the country including Kamuzu and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospitals. In 2021, KA3 raised K10 million to finance PPEs for immigration staff working in border posts. Much more recently, the Commission raised just over K 5 million which was use to support the victims of Cyclone Anna. In line with the objects of the company, the company has also supported the members of the association in distress due to bereavement and severe illness and other challenges.
